We’re hiring!  Opened in April 2016, East City Bookshop is a rapidly growing independent bookstore in Southeast Washington, DC.  We focus on our neighborhood’s and customers’ needs, with a broad but carefully curated general selection and a large children’s section.  Great customer service is our first priority.  We host 3 to 4 author and community events every week, and our goal is to continue refining our events calendar to bring great book events to our customers on Capitol Hill and in surrounding neighborhoods.  

Positions open:

(1) Part-time Bookseller

(2) Part-time Bookseller with interest in growing into full-time position in management

(1) Part-time Bookseller, Job Description

Part time booksellers work 3 to 5 shifts/week, totaling 15 to 25 hours/week. Evening and weekend availability required.

Important:  All booksellers will work some weekend days, and all should be available during some three-day weekends and major holidays, particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas--a crucial time during the retail year.

Description of Responsibilities:

Booksellers will support everything related to front-line selling and the customer experience, which includes both retail book and gift sales. A bookseller’s typical day might include:

  • Hand-selling to customers

  • Point of sale transactions

  • Shipping/receiving books and other items

  • Merchandising products

  • Supporting administrative tasks

  • Keeping the store clean and tidy

  • Helping with events, in store and off site

  • Writing blurbs and brief reviews for books to use for shelf-talkers and staff favorites displays

  • Carrying boxes up to 40 pounds up and down stairs

Important characteristics:  ability to enjoy people, even when they’re not at their most enjoyable.  Love of literature, books, and words, of course!  Tendency to be cheerfully unflappable, especially when several items demand your attention at the same time.  Highly refined listening skills and the desire to make someone’s day a little better through books and happy thoughts. Team players needed.

Hourly wage:  $12.50 (DC minimum wage as of July 1, 2017)

Booksellers receive staff discount on books and and other items purchased for personal use.

Starting wage fis $12.50/hour (DC minimum wage).
