Public defender in New York City by day, award-winning author Sergio de la Pava’s new novel LOST EMPRESS is coming this spring from Pantheon Books.

One of The Millions’ “Most Anticipated Books of 2018,” LOST EMPRESS is a meaty, funny, and romantic novel, which takes place in NY and NJ and covers such varied topics as the criminal justice system, the Dallas Cowboys, and what it is to be an immigrant in America. The Nix author Nathan Hill hails LOST EMPRESS as: “A hilarious, smart, and madcap novel that occupies the porous border between comedy and drama, science and philosophy, story and dream, grim reality and pure imagination. A singular achievement. I’ve never read anything like it.”

Author of A Naked Singularity (winner of the 2013 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize) and Personae, both originally self-published by de la Pava and his wife (also a public defender), and later by Chicago University Press, de la Pava has consistently been compared to everyone from David Foster Wallace to Samuel Beckett to Junot Diaz. You can read more about de la Pava’s interesting background in a 2013 piece from New York Magazine.
