OutWrite Presents: The Future Is Still Very Queer

Saturday, May 4, 2019 - 5:30pm

East City Bookshop and OutWrite present speculative readings from Rashid Darden, Lara Elena Donnelly, and Nibedita Sen. Moderated by Marianne Kirby.

Rashid DardenRashid Darden (he/his) is an award-winning novelist who uses the written word as a vehicle for the advancement of justice and social action.  His influences are wide and varied, from Paul Beatty and Saul Williams to Jackie Collins and Stephen King. Because of the dearth of such stories in his literary upbringing, his novels will always include characters who are gay or bisexual men of color.

Lara Elena DonnellyLara Elena Donnelly (she/her) is the author of the vintage-glam spy thriller trilogy The Amberlough Dossier (Tor), as well as short fiction and poetry appearing in venues including Strange Horizons, Escape Pod, Nightmare, and Uncanny. A graduate of the Clarion and Alpha writers’ workshops, Lara has also served as on-site staff at the latter, mentoring amazing teens who will someday take over the world of SFF. Lara is currently a guest lecturer in the MFA program at Sarah Lawrence College and a teacher at the Catapult Classes in New York City.

Marianne KirbyMarianne Kirby (she/her) writes about bodies both real and imagined. She plays with the liminal space between vanishing and visibility. She authored Dust Bath Revival and its sequel Hogtown Market; she co-authored Lessons from the Fatosphere: Quit Dieting and Declare a Truce with Your Body. A long-time writer, editor, and activist, Marianne has contributed to women’s interest publications, news outlets, and TV shows that require people to have opinions. She has been published by the Guardian, xoJane, the Daily Dot, Bitch Magazine, Time, and others. She has appeared on tv and radio programs ranging from the Dr. Phil Show to Radio New Zealand.

Nibedita SenNibedita Sen (she/her) is a queer Bengali writer, editor and gamer from Calcutta. A graduate of Clarion West 2015, her work has appeared or is forthcoming in The Dark, PodcastleNightmare and Fireside. She helps edit Glittership, an LGBTQ SFF podcast, enjoys the company of puns and potatoes, and is nearly always hungry. Hit her up on Twitter at @her_nibsen
